Retro to Kitschy-Cool

Updated: Aug 7

First, it was the 70s, then the 80s, and then 90s fashion that merged with the current style, and it looks like the 2000s are here. Celebrities are ditching the mom jeans and windbreakers for Von Dutch hats and bedazzled everything. Yes! Frosted lip glosses and popcorn shirts are making a comeback.

The trend started to emerge a couple of months ago when Bella Hadid ditched her signature mom jeans and swapped them for low-rise flared pants. Other celebrities such as supermodel Kendall Jenner, and even Kylie Jenner, have worn cheetah patterns on multiple occasions.

The primary inspiration behind the 2000s fashion style was Paris Hilton. It won’t be tough to notice everyone wearing similar articles to what she wore back in the early 2000s. Drake, a popular hip-hop singer, recently threw a 2000s-themed birthday party where all the celebrities wore 2000s-inspired looks.

It wasn’t the first time the supermodel Kendall Jenner wore a 2000s heiress Paris Hilton-inspired look. She wore a bedazzled, sequined dress for her 21st birthday as well, which got a lot of attention. Meanwhile, Bella Hadid has been seen wearing the Aaliyah-inspired uniform (teeny sunglasses and low-slung track pants).

On the other hand, the Juicy Couture velvet tracksuit with butt-rhinestones is out of stock on every website that sells it. The 2000s, the next wave. The mom jeans, Birkenstocks, bodysuits, flannels, and Docs gained the attention of everyone when they came around 2017.

The stores were overloaded with hundreds of mom and boyfriend jeans, but it is about time that they are going to slowly vanish and get replaced by scarves as tops and floppy newsboy caps whether you like it or not.

It wasn’t too long ago, perhaps 10 years ago, we said to ourselves, “What was I thinking?” Not for long, it is time that the 2000s are next as a new trend whether you like it or not.

Major designers such as Balenciaga and YEEZY have released their spring-summer collections and happened to incorporate the 2000s in their designs. Runway shows are proof that the 2000s are going to be the next big thing in the upcoming spring and summer. One of the most popular brands, Kanye West, has included a velour tracksuit in YEEZY Season 5. Once adored by Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, the velour tracksuit now counts celebrities such as Rihanna and Kylie Jenner among its new fans. The bucket hat is still here to live. Celebrities like Jay-Z dragged the fashion from the 90s to the 2000s. They are not going anywhere.

Not trying to jump into the new trend of 2000s fashion? Stick to basics and neutrals. Do not expect them to change. They never change.
